Parts Work (IFS)

Making Sense of Your Inner World

Have you ever felt like there are different parts of you pulling in opposite directions?

One part wants to move forward, while another feels stuck in resentment.

Your anxious parts overshadow your ability to feel confident and creative.

A flare of anger disrupts your capacity for playfulness.

One part wants vanilla, another wants chocolate.

For many survivors of complex or relational trauma, this inner conflict can feel confusing or overwhelming. But from a parts work (Internal Family Systems) perspective, this complexity isn’t a flaw—it’s a reflection of the mind’s healthy, adaptive response to adversity.

Understanding Your “Parts”

Parts work identifies these conflicting feelings, impulses, and beliefs as different “parts” of your internal system. Each part has its own motivations, fears, wounds, and protective strategies—often shaped by past experiences that threatened our physical and emotional safety.

Rather than trying to suppress or override these inner voices, parts work helps you understand them and address their concerns without being overtaken and reliving the pain of the past. Through this lens, inner conflict becomes a meaningful way to address what your system has been carrying for years and finally get to the root of disruptive patterns and achieve lasting resolve.

In distressing or triggering moments, it is common for certain parts to step forward to protect you- typically through a combination of people-pleasing, shutting down, overthinking, anger, seeking control, or avoidance. Other parts hold the deeper emotional burdens and pain related to past traumatic experiences. Together, these parts make up the challenges people commonly explore in parts work.

With therapeutic guidance, you begin to:

  • Recognize which parts are showing up in the moment

  • Track the emotions, stories, memories, and sensations they carry

  • Understand the original conditions that shaped their beliefs
  • Experiment with compassionate ways of responding to their concerns

  • Build inner safety and trust so you can respond rather than react

  • Reclaim lost aspects of your wholeness

This process gradually leads to more easeful ways of navigating internal conflict, replacing shame and confusion with clarity, confidence, and self-leadership.

What Parts Work Looks Like in Sessions

In our sessions, we move at a sustainable, trauma-informed pace. Together, we explore the beliefs, images, sensations, and emotions that arise from different parts of your system. As we get familiar with these inner perspectives, we unpack the burdens and wounds that become activated in moments of overwhelm. Overtime, we will develop a working map of your parts, alongside the self awareness required to achieve more graceful responses to moments of adversity and dysregulation. We will cultivate the self-healing capacities of your inner-leader and deepen your ability to access the calm, grounded presence at the core of who you are when you need it most. Patterns that once felt paralyzing will become workable.

Parts Work & Somatic Therapy

When combined with somatic therapy, parts work becomes even more potent. Together, they offer a top-down and bottom-up approach, addressing both the cognitive and neurological impacts of trauma.

This integrated process allows us to track the way your parts and their cognitive patterns pair with somatic patterns. We modulate between the cognitive process and somatic process to create the space to recognize what your system needs most in any particular moment in your healing journey. Success with this process grants you the acute awareness to recognize triggers prior to being overtaken, spiraling, and losing your power. You will develop the tangible tools required to mitigate this moments and reclaim your resiliency. This comprehensive approach helps my clients reclaim confidence, inner peace, and a deep sense of wholeness.
